You don’t need balance, you need backbone!
Most people don’t fail because life is hard. They fail because focus never becomes a constant.
“This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.”
Joshua 1:8 ESV

You and I are developed beings. We are not animals as some would have us believe. We have been created to go out into the world and produce amazing results. We are natural explorers. We are uniquely interested. We crave to know more. Well, until life comes and steals our joy and we “grow up.” You have been designed for success that line up with your biggest desires!
Lately I have been on a journey of self discovery. I have spent some time over the last few weeks to go deep into the whys, hows and whats of my life. I have deep delved into my strengths and my creative production.
Music Inside You
I am interested in how I can creatively express what is inside of me. It’s time to get the ‘music’ out. Getting the music out in your life is something worth achieving! The music inside can be anything; dancing, words, baking, parenthood or a world wide ministry. The music inside of you is either pulsating loudly or quietly floating in the depths of your soul. Success gets it out into the world!
This is where focusing comes in. Often in Christian circles we use language that doesn’t always connect with normal living. When God says to Joshua, “Meditate, day and night” we don’t always connect that to our situations. Joshua is being told that in order to succeed in his assignment for life it will not be easy, it is simple, but not without work.
The big picture is, and what really attracts us, is that an abundant, overflowing life is possible. We are able, through our lives, to produce work that amply provides for our families, personal desires and more. This excites us!
The problem is that you and I will run away from focus. It is seen as too extreme, hard work. We end up pursuing a ‘work/life’ balance which really doesn’t exist. I am not sure it makes sense when we have a mission as important as ours. Culture tells us to chase and succeed in our dreams so we can retire early and live on a beach bored until we die.
Chasing dreams feels awesome, watching the sun set drifting after something that is emotional and fleeting. You will never catch it. Dreams are never focussed.
When you dated your spouse you were obsessed with her. You focussed on her. Your relationship became strong because of this focussed obsession. She said yes because you took the time and effort to win her over. Building your marriage with effort creates a lasting result.
This is where mediation and focus replace wishful thinking. It is where belief turns into action—and where prosperity begins. You are building results.
Focus and Balance
Myron Golden, a Christian Entrepreneur and Trainer, describes focus simply as a season but he adds in, ‘so is balance.’
A season needs to be a season. It has a beginning and an end. When you are starting out learning something new — focus. Spend time obsessing and pushing into the subject. Thoughts are being expanded. God ideas bubble out, fresh and inspiring ideas begin to surface. The time we put in pays off! The longer we stay in this position mental and practical break throughs arrive.
Please Note: when you are out with your wife walking the dog let ==balance take over.== The time of focus is over, now it’s time to let peace flow. That is the peace that guards your heart.
It’s time to adjust your thinking. Meditation is focus—and focus produces the peace you’ve been looking for. It is your day and night work. It will open up the door to a prosperous life. It will create the connections you need to succeed.
Your Challenge
Don’t stop short. Don’t quit.
Don’t let your tired mind or weak emotions take you away from your time of focus.
Backbone, not balance. Call out your laziness.
Go deep and pursue the God idea you need to win.
8 Steps to Create Focus
- Get your Bible out and read. Search with intention.
- Find scriptures you need to focus on.
- Put them somewhere you can see them.
- Talk to yourself, God and friends about what you are seeing.
- Capture and develop the ideas that rise up.
- Do the work to make the idea work.
- Relax. Everyday let balance manifest.
- There is always time for peace.

Leadership Takeaway
- Focus multiplies capacity. What you obsess over determines the results you create. Without focus, talent and vision remain unused potential.
- Discipline beats inspiration. Waiting for the right mood or the perfect dream is wasted time. Leaders turn belief into consistent, structured action.
- Peace is a product of order. Balance doesn’t come by chasing comfort—it flows when focus is applied and priorities are clear.
