What Has Your Attention?
Our obsession will determine the direction of our thoughts, our actions and ultimately where we end up in our lives.
Writing is something I have always enjoyed. I have enjoyed writing fiction and stories. I even enjoyed writing essays in school, up to a point. I love how words flow out of my heart. It is like I can switch off my mind and pour out a liquid. It only gets hard when I start to think or focus on the typos and spelling mistakes.
I remember in high school when we had typing class. It was something I wanted to master. So much so that when they blindfolded us to type, I was in tears because I knew I kept making mistakes. I always try too hard.
I am the same with sports. Far too competitive. I had to stop playing because my enjoyment was being ruined. I still get very emotional watching England play rugby and when the Toronto Blue Jays lose in baseball.
There is something about passion that makes us all tick. We can become so connected to something that it begins to overwhelm our lives. I was just reading a post about being an introvert and what that kind of person enjoys. The writer was obsessed with being someone who did not want to connect with others…
As people of obsession (you might obsess about not obsessing), we must understand that our brains—our minds—are wired to have an objective.
I started writing this blog post about writing. My writing has shifted greatly over the years, but my main focus recently has become writing, talking and even preaching about faith. Faith, or trust, in something puts the control and the expectation onto something other than our own ability.
Our lives trust in something. I have realised that faith must fully submit, and if you are fully submitted to something that hasn’t got your best interests at heart, you will always come up short. This is why I believe that we must have our faith in God.
Our faith in God will define us. When we are under God, who loves us beyond anything we can do or have done, we know that His desire for us is good.
If our obsession becomes connected to the God who created us, we are attaching ourselves to the Designer of our lives. He designed our bodies and how our minds work, and He has mapped out our lives. Sometimes we connect perfectly to that plan, and at other times we drift from the plan.
Jesus told Martha that Mary had found the one thing she needed. Mary sat at the feet of Jesus. Mary received what was needed. She had her focus on the Person who could provide the answer. Martha focused on the situation. Her obsession was people. Mary’s obsession was a Person.
Our obsession will determine the direction of our thoughts, our actions and ultimately where we end up in our lives. Why not correct your focus today? Why not shift your attention to what God offers as you connect your faith to Him?
Put your attention on Him. Place your affection on Him. Be aware of Him. Live your life for Him. Replace whatever you obsess about with Him. He will shift worry, remove fear and place you into a place of peace and joy. You will come through everything you face. You will be lifted up and you will begin to see that faith in God was all you ever needed!
